Gavin Delaney and Kerrie Roan have been friends since they were in pre-school; in fact, they've grown up like brother and sister. Things change, though, when Kerrie's mom is diagnosed with breast cancer. Kerrie insists she doesn't want to be defined as the girl whose mom is really sick, that her mom's illness won't change who she is. And yet, Gavin hardly knows Kerrie anymore, and he can't help but wonder if their growing apart is natural or if it's because Kerrie has changed since her mom got sick. Everything changes in a heartbeat, one cold winter morning just after Christmas. Suddenly, Gavin understands Kerrie's pain. He understands the way grief can change a person, and he wonders if Kerrie ever hated him for everything he has, the way he suddenly hates her. Can Gavin and Kerrie hold on to each other and their friendship through their grief?
