Burham Falls was a small, quiet town near the Hudson, like so many other towns that lie just to the north of New York City. But Burnham Falls was changing. From the village square, the country club, or any front porch in town one could see the shining glass and aluminum of the new research laboratory set high on a hill--and below the hill, the sign which read: BURNHAM FALLS WELCOMES AMTEC INDUSTRIES, INC.

The arrival of Amtec Industries was a joyous occasion in Burnham Falls, for the town had been declining, and Joe Carpenter's Shellac Company had not been able to remedy the situation. But although the corporation meant a new and more prosperous way of life for the townspeople, it was also to bring many unforeseen, often tragic changes in the village--and in the lives of four women: Laura, the beatifully chic but untalented actress who found little solace as the wife of Amtec's president; Jeannie, the too-attractive daughter of the town's handyman; Harriet, the well-bred daughter of Joe Carpenter; and Sally, the young wife of a junior executive at Amtec.
