Cornstalkers

Cornstalkers is the first chapbook for 6-12 year-olds in the Recipe for Adventure series by Steve Burt, who is a 2004 Bram Stoker Award winner for Young Readers and 5-time Mom's Choice Award winner. (Note: Steve's 2003 Bram Stoker Nominee was a final five selection in a field won by Harry Potter.) Second and third books are Kite Boy and Ghost Pets. After receiving a Recipe for Adventure kit in the mail while summering at Gram's house in rural Maine's farm country, siblings Krista and Layton and their grandmother encounter a living scarecrow who uses seven super-powered corn kernels to raise an army of cornstalk people. The Recipe kit gives them tools to help them take on the scarecrow and his followers. But taking them on may also mean helping them accomplish their goal. Dr. Burt also writes the Dumb Jokes for Kids series and the FreeKs teen mystery series (FreeK Camp, FreeK Show, FreeK Week).
