Conrad's father is too busy writing sappy television dramas to talk to him, his mother is always working, and his sister spends most of her time nursing sick dolls. So Conrad has no choice but to amuse himself... with thoughts of war, guns, and killing.

His fantasies are so powerful that one night he finds himself in an actual war, flying a highly dangerous bombing mission over Germany. When the mission succeeds, Conrad is elated—war is exciting! But when he's shot down by Nazis and taken prisoner, the harsher realities of war intrude. Somehow, Conrad realizes, he's got to escape from his ruthless captors—and from a dream world that's become all too terrifyingly real....
