George Washington has just died and young Christopher Draper, whose uncle is publisher of the ALEXANDRIA GAZETTE, sets off to find out about Washington's real nature. Specifically, he goes off in search of people who might explain why Martha Washington burned a collection of personal letters on the night her husband died. On the pretense of writing a biography, he brings the flesh and blood first president to life. Through interviews with such contemporaries as John and Abigail Adams and Alexander Hamilton, as well as numerous slaves and servants, a stunning portrait emerges of an ambitious, land-hungry young man - full of imperfections and personal struggles - who nonetheless transcended his limitations and became one of the greatest leaders the world has ever known.
