In 1900 his novel Eben Holden, A Tale of the North Country, proved a major success. According to the New York Times it was the 4th best-selling novel in the United States that year. His next novel, D'ri and I (1901) was 10th, The Light in the Clearing (1917) was 2nd, and A Man for the Ages (1919) was 5th.
