Miss Lydia Peartree was looking forward to an afternoon pleasure cruise off the coast of Devon. But she didn't expect the captain of the Rook to have the appearance of a pirate and the manners of a sea dog. Captain Matthew Frobisher, once a spy for king and country, now spends his time training young men in the art of espionage. To his chagrin, his superiors have saddled him with a silly Society chit on what was supposed to be a voyage for his students.

But the captain is surprised by Lydia's courage during a squall that would send most women belowdecks. And Lydia is equally surprised to find that beneath the captain's salty demeanor lies an intelligent -- and pleasingly handsome -- man whose resourcefulness will free the shipwrecked vessel from the French shore.
