On the day of his college graduation, Troy Lawson learns his older sister has died in California, leaving him as guardian of his 14 year old niece, Haley. Over her objection, Troy and Haley move back to Indiana, where he starts a new job teaching at a small high school and coaching the girls' basketball team.
