Butterflies on the Beach, Part 1

Do we really know the people we love? We think we do. We think we know everything. That makes us feel our world is secure. How the sun always rises in the east and sets in the west. It’s a feeling of comfort and stability. It keeps us grounded. However, this is often a false sense of security. Many times we don’t really know until we discover something that was hidden. When this happens our relationship with the world around us suddenly changes. It starts to give way like the ground beneath us crumbles during an earthquake. We only think our lives are built on solid ground until the earth starts to shake. That’s when we realize just how vulnerable we really are. We all have secrets. Secrets we don’t want to share with the world. These secrets can grow very heavy over a lifetime. Learning about these secrets changes our lives, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. Uncovering these secrets can impact our sense of stability and our relationships going forward. That’s the decision Steve Wells is wrestling with. Should he share an earthshaking secret with his granddaughter Cindy? A secret that he feels is important for her to know, even though it will shake up her world forever and quite possibly crush her sense of stability? Or should he just take it with him to the grave? He finally decides this is a secret he must share with her, no matter the consequences.
