Was there any way a woman could survive without marrying in 1903?

Selina Sobitkis had come to a stranger bleak land called Scotland to marry a man she had never met. When she arrived she found that her fiancé had been killed in a pit accident, and that unease amongst the miners was focused on the colliery, Sir Evan MacKinnon, the man under whose protection she had traveled from Lithuania.

Selina's spirit of independence and courage would not allow her to return to the poverty and oppression of her native land. But she would not opt for the easy solution and find another husband. And she would never become Sir Evan's mistress…however persuasive he was, her pride would not allow it!

So she set about making her own way in the world, learning to speak English, to read and to write…determined to fight her way up and prove that a peasant could become a woman of independent means.
