In the summer of 1951, teenagers Don Blue and Elizabeth May fall deeper into love than either of them knew to be possible. But in the segregated land of rural North Carolina, their love is a crime: Elizabeth is Caucasian, and Don is biracial. After Elizabeth’s racist mother makes a shocking demand, Don and Elizabeth are forced to part ways and never speak again. Over sixty years later, Don knows he’s running out of time. His stomach tumors are spreading, and at his age he knows the sun is about to set on his life anyway. But there is one person he can’t forget, one flame he can’t extinguish in his mind: Elizabeth, the woman who broke his heart six decades before. As Don’s body starts to shut down he sets out on a quest to find Elizabeth before time runs out and finally answer the question that has haunted him all his life: is first love meant to rage uncontrollably and then burn out, or do those fires never really die? And if we do run back to our lost soul mates and try for a second chance, can things ever really be the same?
