About This Book

The daughter of a railroad baron, Lila Catherine Stockdale (Cat), always did what her father asked of her without question. But when he announced her engagement to his partner's son, Harrison, Cat could not oblige. Like the son he never had, Cat's father would not listen to her misgivings about Harrison. Then, while on an outing with Harrison, he tries to rape her, causing her to flee into the mountainous terrain. Seneca Pierce, a surveyor for Cat's father, wounds Cat while out hunting. While caring for Cat, Seneca comes to learn about her predicament and understands her reluctance to return home. After spending time together at Seneca's cabin, the two come to love each other and Seneca agrees to marry Cat so she will be spared a life with Harrison. But when the couple return to the city, Seneca sees the kind of life Cat has led and feels certain she will never be happy living alone in their secluded cabin. When circumstances tear them apart, Cat doesn't get a chance to tell Seneca she is carrying his child. Believing that their marriage wasn't legal, Seneca returns to his cabin. Meanwhile, Harrison learns of the child and threatens Cat into marrying him.
