She woke to the agony of a two-inch hickory spike, soaked in garlic oil, piercing her left shoulder. As she began to sit up, her attacker shot another wooden nail into her chest an inch above her heart. She was naked. Her shoulder screamed in pain. A tall slim man in a military sweater and balaclava loomed over her. He shifted his nail gun directly over her heart. She looked into his eyes, trying to measure him, to learn something more about his intentions. She saw nothing helpful. She nodded carefully and slowly lay back down.
