His leader, William of Normandy, had conquered England's Saxon king. And now the soldier was telling Lady Elfrida that the lands of her noble father were forfeit to William.

In fury she spat, "You kill our Saxon men, take our lands and leave us penniless and dependent on charity" Her eyes glittered darkly as she faced her enemy. "Is this your Norman justice?"

The soldier leaned forward, his gaze disturbing in its intensity.

"It is war, my lady," he said softly. "All spoils to the victor."
