Sixteen-year-old Sam West finally feels at home in the little town of Whitebush, Michigan. After a recent near-death experience, he's content to settle into the routine of homeschooling and hiking with his guardian and friend, Lawrence Woods.
But when Lawrence is late returning from a wilderness retreat, Sam becomes concerned. To make matters worse, a stranger appears with a fake delivery, a Russian accent, and a drive to find something Sam doesn't know exists.
With the Russian thugs on his trail, Sam takes off into the mountains with his wolf, Silver, by his side. His gut tells him Lawrence is tangled up in this crazy mess, so Sam searches the mountainside for him, relying on his wits, wisdom, and wiles. Little does he know how much trouble they are both in until it's too late.
