Beware the Beast

Charlotte's heart lurched sickeningly at the thought of going away. She honestly didn't know what Alex meant when he answered his mother's question confidently. "Oh yes," he said. "I will be staying now, won't I, Charlotte?"

Charlotte was lost for a reply. Was Alex implying that, because she would be leaving, he would be forced to remain?

Despite what he had said and done, despite her motives for agreeing to his infamous contract, she wanted to stay. This was her home; this man was her husband. And she loved him.
