Bel is an English country girl who moves to London and begins working as a secretary for a prominent shipping company. Eventually, shy Bell attracts the attention of Mr. Brownlee, a younger-ish partner at the firm. This causes discord in the office. Meanwhile, Bel becomes attached to a young artist that appears uninvited on her balcony. Then the artist moves to Italy. When her boss goes away on business, she is dismissed. With no friends or family, Bel must find solace somewhere.
