About This Book

Davanté Williams watches his mother breathe her final breaths. He tries to hold on to her hand, but her weak arm falls limp off the side of her hospital bed. His mother's life gradually passes away. Davanté's heart sinks to the lowest of depths. He cannot lose her now. He is only seventeen years old. He has not learned enough about life to be on his own. He does not know how to live. He is still hiding his artistic talents out of fear of revealing his inadequacies to the world. Bravely, Davanté lets his mother go. He goes on to struggle with his feelings of grief and loss. Just as he begins to manage his emotions, his life takes yet another turn. Davanté meets his father for the first time. A man of a mysterious past, Davanté's father, an ex-convict, pursues his son with dogged determination. Davanté is having none of it. Eventually, Davanté runs away from the world. Alone and confused, Davanté receives support from an unlikely friend. Slowly, he picks himself up and turns his attention to his artistic talents. Triumphantly, he reveals his gifts to the world through his senior project. It turns out be a wonderful artistic expression of genius proportions. Finally, Davanté can see the light at the end of the tunnel. His heart begins to climb back from its depressive depths. Davanté begins to learn about himself. He learns to forgive. He learns to live. He learns to love.
