When Sheriff Dobie brought Coleman to town and made him the night man in the jail, he only thought he was saving the young man's life. After a worrisome start, Coleman grew into the job, but soon he was being troubled by a young cowboy and he had to learn more than just cleaning up the jail. Sheriff Dobie tutors him on facing violent and troublesome men. Sheriff Dobie rides out from time to time with a U.S. Marshal, Hendry Irons, where his mettle, courage and wisdom is tested, and he tries to pass this down to Coleman. An apt student, soon Coleman is wearing a Deputy's badge. Marshal Irons has passed down to Sheriff Dobie skills and a patient, clever and careful process to enforce the law with the minimum of injury and death. What the sheriff has learned and is learning he passes down to his new deputy.
