      John Ranger returns from Russia unaware of the importance of his discovery linking high-ranking FSB officers with the Russian Mafia. Depressed, and disillusioned, he decides to quit British Intelligence. Simon Sparrowhawk persuades him to return to Russia, after Natasha, whom Ranger helped to smuggle out, is recruited by the service.
