Aunt Sudie quickly grabbed Ebony, cradled her in her arms,
and shooed the other chickens away.
"Shoo! Shoo! You bad chickens.
I am ashamed of all of you."
Aunt Sudie had never had a black chicken before, but when Mrs. Pattibox gave the little black hen to Aunt Sudie as a gift, she instantly fell in love with her. However, her other chickens, which happened to be all white, did not feel the same.
Aunt Sudie's Chicken is based on an event that happened years ago when Mrs. Goff was a child and was given a little black chicken. She learned very quickly that being different can often lead to a lonely and sometimes abusive situation.
