Atlas's Burden

Jimmy Nielson thinks he has enlisted in the Vietnam War as a way to pay for college while also having an adventure with his buddy Brian Forsberg, but he is really running away from the ghosts of his childhood that continue to haunt him. Although he immerses himself in the grueling life as a tanker in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Jimmy must still confront a supernatural nemesis that threatens his family's past, present, and future. Forced to watch the two loves of her life leave for Vietnam, sophomore Julia Forsberg watches as the war tears apart her idyllic hometown, but when the spirits of Lake Wanagiyata begin to reach out to her, she must bear the burden of an ancient secret that is locked away beneath Split Rock, Minnesota. While Julia and Jimmy each confronts their destiny, Father Gary Mackenzie begins a journey that will take him from the beaches of California to the jungles of Vietnam, where he begins to collect the first pieces of a puzzle that will eventually help him solve the mystery of the place the Dakota Indians once called ‘The Place of Souls.'
