Detective Ray Santos once led with fearless, almost reckless resolve in the 75th Ranger Parachute Battalion in Afghanistan. Today he works deep undercover for the LAPD. His former commanding officer, California Fire Marshal Wade McCabe summons him to assist on a case unlike anything he could imagine. McCabe reveals a deadly problem: suspected murder and arson linked to the elite Redding smokejumpers of the Sacramento Valley. A veteran jumper plunged to his death when both parachutes suspiciously failed. Accelerants proved that three massive wildfires-the Park, Borel, and Lake Fires were deliberately set and each time, the smokejumpers were the only ones on scene. Santos agrees to infiltrate the close-knit unit, warned to trust no one. Smokejumpers are legendary, flying blindly into infernos, bonded by fire and danger.
