Rachel, born soon after the Dark Tide decades, a time of social turmoil so vile that even talking about it is taboo, wants just to live a quiet, normal life, but finds it difficult to escape the pariah legacy of her grandfather, that of an accused prion, someone whose warped ideas are infectious. One day, though, she suddenly finds that she too is under suspicion as a young man named Colin arrives with bizarre ideas that the source of the Dark Tide is still with them in hiding, and far more dangerous than anyone suspects. Colin claims that her grandfather had the key to the secrets and that is it now time to find the truth.
