Former soldier, expatriate, and dedicated curmudgeon Tom MacManus seeks solace in anonymity. His sins of commission and omission haunt him into becoming an urban hermit. When a figure from his shady past names him the guardian of her daughter, Tom utilizes an eclectic group of confederates to protect and nurture a person he barely knows. From the wheat fields of the Midwest to the sultry terrain of Vietnam, through the environs of Cold War Germany and, ultimately, the Canadian tundra, Tom quests for penance. Unable to assuage former transgressions, the pro bono father discovers a dose of selflessness renews his interest in life.
