Rachel Fairley wholeheartedly disapproved of her neighbor, Lord William Kingsley, because he had inherited a slavery plantation in Barbados. Rachel thought it abhorrent that his money came from such an inhumane industry. And when she finally met him, he was as impossible as she expected. Rachel's dislike for William intensified when he refused to give her brother permission to marry his sister.
