Young Jay Price only has a few pleasures left in life after a serious accident incapacitates her. One of them is watching the wild horse herds run and dreaming of running with them on the back of a mustang pony. But the doctors have told her not only will she never walk again, she will never ride either.

Her future looks bleak until one day her father brings an injured colt to their ranch and she does everything in her power to nurse him back to health. Soon the fate of the colt and the girl are bound together by a wild prayer and an even wilder hope that one day both of them will be well enough for Jay to saddle the palomino pony, sit astride his back, and ride him through meadows and valleys of their land.
