A lot of people hated Garney Wilcox, what with the way he was turning his mother's precious woods into expensive subdivisions for transplanted Yankees. Just about the only person who had anything good to say about the ornery, spoiled brat-turned-real estate developer was the woman whose land was making him rich-his mama, Miss Willie Wilcox. But when Garney is found thoroughly dead--poisoned, electrocuted and hit over the head--it is Miss Willie who confesses to the murder.

Kate Mulcay, a columnist for an Atlanta newspaper and Miss Willie's neighbor, knows the old country woman too well to believe she could kill anyone, let alone her beloved Garney. When Kate starts looking for the real killer, she soon finds herself in danger of becoming the murderer's next victim.
