The beauty of Montana's high country lures professor, poet and trail cook Lee Squires to the Mission Mountains, and into the challenge of concocting vegetarian cuisine on a llama-riding, ecofriendly excursion to Lost Pipe Lake.

But things turn decidedly unfriendly when a showdown between a hotshot developer from Los Angeles and a Native American environmental activist ends in murder: someone walks quietly from the woods and fatally shoots Roland Redhawk with a bow and arrow.
