Darret listened quietly, hearing with a flush of both pride and shame how Rox had staged her entry into Greyfriars, charming the populace easily with her brilliant music yet telling the alert ears of the Guild that there was deadly peril stalking her. Telling how her secret had been revealed by the Enchanter, how she was an outcast from her home, that she must face peril and death in the desolation of Otherwhere to destroy the evil within the ring and her hopeless awareness that there would be nothing for her to come back to whether she succeeded or not. Darret was not an emotional man but Matta's clear and unembroidered recital pushed him almost to the brink of apoplectic fury. The shame he felt the three men could see clearly enough; two of them were as shocked as Darret himself that Rox was even capable of turning to the Guild, that the Guild would be at her service without question.
