Kate McClintock was an imposter. In order to help her father with his daring plan to restore his property and fortune, Kate agreed to pose as the celebrated courtesan the Contessa D' Allesandria of the Kingdom of Sardinia.

Since the plan required removing to Berefordshire, Kate felt certain she was in no danger of discovery. Protected by her entourage, admired by the local male population, Kate found herself enjoying the role of the famous flirt.

But with the arrival from London of Sir Maxim, Kate's peace was to be badly cut up. Not only had Sir Maxim been an "intimate" with the real contessa, but it seemed he was determined to become an "intimate" of Kate's!
