When Dr Fraser Callan claims that Alkovin, the new ‘wonder drug' for leukaemia, has dangerous side effects, his boss, Connie Flint sends him on to America for three months to shut him up. This is merely the latest in a series of misfortunes for Fraser. His previous boss and mentor, Dr John Somersby, has been murdered and Connie has taken over from him. Somersby had refused to have anything to do with Alkovin, but Connie and her colleagues begin a medical trial. Then Fraser returns from America to discover that Frances, his fiancée, has contracted leukaemia and Connie is treating her with Alkovin. Under threat of dismissal, Fraser takes his troubles to Department of Health Inspector Tom Jones. But worse is to follow, far worse, as Fraser has to rediscover the skills of his misspent youth in order to survive.
