A Gift for Abigail Rose In the years following the American Civil War, people struggled to survive. Many homes and farms lay in ruin. Jobs were scarce and the prejudices that existed before the conflict had only worsened. Times were hard, but human beings are nothing if not resilient, and will search out ways to be happy. Abigail Rose O'Connor was one of these hardy individuals. Determined to have a good life, she married and started over. She was happy for a time, but nothing lasts forever, and no one is prepared when it is all taken away. Strong in her faith, she prayed for deliverance, but no one seemed to be listening.
