After Steven Lindsay dies, his family cannot find his birth certificate, but his death is registered without it.

When his widow Jill finds the certificate among some old papers, it is only the shortened version, which suggests that Steven was illegitimate, particularly when her friend Kathy researches statutory records and discovers his parents were married several years after he was born.

An elderly family friend eventually explains the circumstances of Steven's wartime birth in Glasgow, but his real father appears to have enlisted in the Highland Light Infantry under a false name, so who was he?
