Richard Atherton presumed Tess Brannen was a promiscuous New Orleans nightclub singer. Yet there was something compelling in her eyes, an innocence so appealing and open to interpretation.

But Richard was so sure about Tess that he almost missed the exhaustion edging her determined smile. And he clung to the notion that the twins she worked seven nights a week to support were the product of one of her affairs and not her sister's orphans.
